Inspiration: Bookcases

by Laura on September 15th, 2009

I’ve got bookcases on the brain. I have moved into a new space that has less storage, and I have a desire to HIDE my clutter, unlike at my last place. I currently have this one, from Target. They have a larger, five-shelf version which I have considered since I got my first place by myself a year ago.

But it didn’t have hidden storage. Sometimes I can’t be bothered to hide things in decorative boxes, you know? Sometimes you just need to HIDE things, but still have them accessible. Well, I came across a fantastic idea using a Billy bookcase from Ikea, with some fabric on the glass-panes on the bottom half of the bookcase — but more on that to come, once I purchase the thing!

I wanted to do some searching on bookcases, to see how other’s organized their bookcases, and the uses of said bookcases. Thus, Inspiration: Bookcases!

So perhaps you are a pack-rat and are just giving into the fact that you have a HUGE collection of STUFF and just want to show it off:

Or maybe you have a collection, but are a bit more refined and take a more traditional approach to it, by paring it back a bit..

Perhaps you don’t use a bookcase for books, but holding extra dishes?

Or a room divider?

Some people live in old buildings with built-ins that offer great architectural details…

Or maybe you add them yourself with trim and molding and a great POP of wallpaper or fabric…

Do you have any fun bookcases? A combination of hidden and open storage ‘cases? What is your style?

  1. Bookcases just seem to magically add warmth to a room. I’m loving the wall papered one, but I would probably pick a slightly different pattern. Oh, and I would die for built-in’s in my office!

Yea, I’m not a big fan of that particular pattern. At least the black and white, anyway, makes it too bold. Something more organic is the route I plan to go. We’ll see what I find! :) And you can always create build-ins with, say, Billy bookcases with height extenders and some crown molding on the top. Yum! :)

  3. Laura, We gave new life to an old book case that was missing a glass panel. We replaced the glass panels with material. I thought this might help you with the IKEA book case you found. Just click on my name to see the book case.

Fantastic! I am thinking of adding little dowels with eye-hooks on the inside of the door and hanging the fabric from that. We’ll see this weekend, hopefully!

    Thanks for sharing,

  5. Good luck finding something to hide your clutter! I am also faced with the same situation, so let me know what works for you!
