Slow Movin’
Anyway, my apartment is an utter mess, smells like paint still from painting my green walls ugly ‘Bone White’ last weekend (and we have more to do…) and I’m just frazzled. All I’ve had the energy to do is sit in front of the television and veg, and sleep, sleep, sleep! I am also tending wounds from a spaz-attack from Kira, leaving the palm of my right hand tore open and my chest with a deep wound. Ow!
Enough blabbing — I have a question for you all out there on the interwebs. Where is a good place to get a certificate in Interior Design? I am interested in pursuing it on the side to see if it’s a fit for me, but because I was screwed out of so much money at my last school for a dinky degree in Web Design, I am being careful with my funds. I am located in Northern Virginia, and am probably going to look at some of the local schools in the area — but do you know of any online programs that are creditable?
I’d love to hear what you think of this. I feel like I want to pursue something that I’m passionate about, and honestly, I was sort of pushed into web design by my advisor at my last school.. What are your thoughts?
Check back later this week/weekend, and I’ll have a post worth reading up here. ;)

I am TOTALLY with you… I have been hunting off and on for some sort of an ID program/certificate for the last few years. I’m also in NoVA! Here’s what I’ve found but am still discouraged. Locally:
- Corcoran: full master’s in ID, but full-time and $$$
- Art Institute of Washington: bachelor’s in ID, also full-time and $$$
- Marymount: master’s in ID, can do part-time, but lots of pre-reqs if you don’t have a bachelor’s in ID already, $$$
The only online program I’ve really found is:
- Art Insitute of Pittsburgh: bachelor’s in ID, ONLINE!, reasonably priced, sounds like it covers what I’d like it to but it’s NOT accredited through ISID
Please let me know if you hear from anyone else, as I am extremely interested in finding something but am stuck since I can’t go full-time and $ is an issue! Best of luck with your move!
Hi! I have a BS in Interior Design and wanted to give you some insight. Interior Design is a full 4-year course load. If you ever want to take the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) Exam you’ll need to have a degree from an accredited university.
Marymount in Arlington has a semi-decent ID Program. I went to Virginia Tech, but am not sure of other programs in the works. You can get an associates at community college, but you have to take extra steps to be able to take the exam or be certified in the state of VA without a 4-year degree.
Hope that helps…..happy designing!

I went to AiW, and know first hand just how expensive it really is. Way too much money for not enough information! At least in the degree I pursued.. So far I am looking at NVCC for their Associate’s program in ID. Looks to be about 6500$ for it, for VA residents. Right now I am more concerned with getting the knowledge then worry about the NCIDQ Exam.

Thanks for the info. I will probably pursue a degree locally and then work to do the exam and certification. Thanks!
Best,
Laura
I’m about 95% sure I’m doing the Associate’s program at NOVA too, starting with 2 classes next week (Theory & Tech of ID and Architectural Drafting for ID)! Many of the classes will actually transfer into the local Master’s programs and cancel out the pre-reqs for Marymount. Maybe we’ll have a class together!

Sadly, I have been too busy over the last couple of weeks to devote any more attention to the matter. I figure come Winter I can make the decision to look into the program. Good luck and let me know how it goes! :)
Best,
