Injecting Design through Curtains

So I have been a total slacker lately. Moving the boyfriend and having a generally ‘blah’ attitude towards everything is causing me to not do much but sit my rear on the couch for the four hours I’m home in the evening and eat my weight in whatever I have around. I have been lacking motivation to do anything. However, this weekend the boyfriend and I did make a trip to Ikea and picked up some swanky curtains for his new living room. We are also in the process of setting up a lovely landing strip for him from his garage, but I forgot to take photos of that.

Now the obiligatory iPhone photo:

Sadly the builders did not center the window on the wall, and his couch is seriously like 9 feet long, so it can really only fit in that ONE. SPOT. The entire apartment is painted a nice neutral tan (are there any non-neutral tans?) and it accents the curtains and the couch quite nicely. These curtains have bits of green and tan mixed in with the brown, the green of which will be picked up in the accent wall on his fireplace that we will paint once he gets his free Glidden paint. I think the curtains do  a good job of anchoring the space, though when you want them open, because they are heavy (there are also thermal black-out curtains behind the patterned ones) they just sort of slide back in place. I believe we will look for pull-backs soon.

Ignore the mess that I tried to crop out, haha. That’s what happens when you try to do 5 different things at once in a new apartment that isn’t even fully unpacked yet. Anyways, next week I’ll probably showcase the awesome landing strip we created with a Hemnes shoe cabinet, a mirror, photo and hopefully a cute plant!

I love the curtains you picked out and will be making a trip to Ikea to get me a pair. I have a question for you I have hard wood floors so what color rug do you think I should get to go with the curtains?

Glad you like them, Kristen. They really do give a more polished look to the room than no curtains — and I love how graphic they are.

In regards to your rug dilemma, you could go for something bold and punchy that pulls from the colors in the curtains, like the Ikea Andrea rug with its mimicking graphic, or the Crate & Barrel Outlet’s jute Kiran rug, which isn’t as soft as the wool ones would be, but adds texture and looks gorgeous against hardwoods.

If you are looking for a but less punch, Crate and Barrel has a Preston rug in a Latte finish that has horizontal “lines” (created by the rise and fall of the threads) that would mimic the shape of the leaves quite nicely. I have the Palmer rug from C&B, which is essentially the same as the Preston rug, but it’s purple. I love it. But it does shed, a lot. If you have animals, I might not go with this. Getting cat hair out of this is a pain, haha!

One thing to consider, is the color of your hardwoods. If they are more yellowy, I may go for a darker rug to anchor the space. If they are newly installed and a nice rich espresso, the punch of color or the neutral base will look great. You can see all the rugs against the curtains here. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Laura… Thank You soooo much for your advice!!! I love how all three look against the curtains.

Fantastic, Kristen. If you decide to grab the curtains and a rug, I would love to see what you go with! Good luck! :)
